Those wanting to attend “Dinner with Dr. Vergidis & Friends,” a new educational fundraiser for the Riverside Foundation for Health Care slated for this Friday evening, had better act fast if they haven’t got tickets yet—it’s almost sold out.
Foundation director Teresa Hazel said a handful of the 150 tickets are left, and anyone who wants them should call the Foundation office (274-4803) or Shawn McCaig (274-4817) right away.
The cost is $50 each, with a portion of the price qualifying for a charitable receipt.
The fundraiser will take place at the Memorial Sports Centre auditorium.
Doors open at 6 p.m., with dinner at 6:30.
Hazel said Dr. Dimitrios Vergidis, the oncologist for the Riverside chemotherapy program and chief oncologist for the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, has volunteered to host and prepare a five-course meal to highlight the healthy eating of the Mediterranean.
“We’re very happy with the positive response to this new fundraiser,” Hazel noted, adding people who attend can rest assured organizers won’t be promoting other fundraising activities during the evening.
“People are definitely interested in the food,” she stressed.
“And I am also seeing a lot of patients of Dr. Vergidis, who think very highly of him and are excited to come out and seen him speak and support him in this venture,” she added.
Dr. Vergidis will prepare the meal, as well as discuss how easy it is to shop and cook for a healthy lifestyle.
“It will be an interactive evening,” said Hazel. “I am looking to be inspired and start eating more healthy.”
The menu will include appetizers including salmon rolls, spanakopita (spinach pies), tsatsiki with pita bread, and roasted garlic, followed by a spinach salad with fruits.
The main course will include lemon potatoes with Greek chicken, humus with spicy beef, roasted cauliflower, and maple-roasted yams.
Dessert will be a traditional Greek yogurt with honey nuts and fruits, along with coffee, tea, and hot chocolate.
There also will be wine at each table.
Hazel noted major sponsors so far include the Rainy River District Breast Health Network, Sysco Food Services of Winnipeg, The Ear Clinic, and Thunder Bay law firm Weiler, Maloney & Nelson.
