Rainy River District School Board students from across the district recently attended a multi-media presentation that alerted them to the deadly consequences of impaired driving.
MADD Canada and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada are bringing the emotionally-charged production, “Wasted,” to roughly one million students across Canada in the fight against impaired driving, and in the support of victims of impaired driving.
The production gave local public board students a very realistic look at the tragedy of impaired driving, and provided them with thought-provoking information to make the right decisions around alcohol, drugs, and driving.
“Wasted” depicts a fictional story of a group of popular high school friends, and how their lives are forever changed when a choice to drive under the influence of alcohol and drugs leads to a horrific, deadly car crash.
While one passenger dies, another is left with severe brain injuries and the young driver responsible for the collision lives.
The production’s message was clear that it was a choice, and not an accident, which led to everything that was lost in an instant.
Alcohol- and/or drug-related crashes are 100 percent preventable.
As the presentation ended, students were shown the sheer magnitude of impaired driving with a moving patchwork of photos of victims who have been killed or seriously injured in an impaired driving crash.
Fort Frances OPP Cst. Anne McCoy also spoke to the students in the audience, many of which were her D.A.R.E. students.
She reinforced the message to make smart decisions to not be in a vehicle with an impaired driver, to not drive while impaired, and to be safe.
