The District 1A senior games will be held here next Wednesday to Friday, attracting more than 100 athletes from Dryden and Kenora to compete against Fort Frances.
Local registration will take place next Tuesday from 8-10 a.m. at the Sister Kennedy Centre. All other athletes can register there each day of the games from 8-10 a.m.
Events include table shuffleboard, euchre, snooker, cribbage, floor shuffleboard, golf, carpet bowling, bridge, five-pin bowling, horseshoes, and darts.
Venues are the Sister Kennedy Centre, Plaza Lanes, Kitchen Creek Golf Course, the Legion, and Rainycrest.
Cost is $20 per athlete, which guarantees them three events and possibly as many as four. A free pancake breakfast also is included in the entry fee.
Games organizer Nick Wihnan said although they have an idea how many out-of-town athletes will be making the trip here, he admitted he wasn’t quite sure who would be participating locally.
Gerry Martin, in charge of the golf portion of the games, said he expects a strong turnout that will be grouped in separate divisions according to handicap.
The 18-hole tournament will take place next Thursday.
Wihnan said the local contingent usually is strong in all sports and he expects to win plenty of medals at this year’s games. But the gold-medal winners will not advance to “Actifest,” the provincial games, because it is only held every second year.
The next “Actifest” is slated in Toronto in 2000.
Wihnan encouraged spectators to come out and attend the games, which tries to promote participation in a fun atmosphere.
