Sturgeon Creek School, the Sturgeon Creek Alternative Program, and Nestor Falls School will be recognized at the Rainy River District School Board meeting tonight for their joint parent engagement and family math night.
Utilizing a $1,000 Parents Reach Out (PRO) grant, the three school councils organized the evening in order to help parents better understand their children’s education.
It also offered practical strategies to parents so they could assist their children with their homework.
“The key to making the event successful was the teamwork involved in co-ordinating three school councils, three staffs, the assistance of School Support Services [SSS], and, of course, students,” the report to the board noted.
It added each group was delegated specific responsibilities, such as promoting the event and planning the meal.
The Family Math Night portion followed the meal, allowing parents an hour to visit various classrooms that were set up with math games and challenges.
“Children and parents enjoyed participating in these activities, with everyone learning and having fun at the same time,” the reported noted, adding the various stations were planned, prepared, and run by school staff and SSS staff.
In the next hour, parents were invited to attend two of the six workshops offered by school staff, SSS staff, and the OPP.
“Workshops focused on presenting key information and strategies that would assist parents as they helped their children at home,” the reported said.
While the parents were engaged in the workshops, students were entertained with a movie in the gym and games in the toddler room, supervised by former students of the three schools.
The report indicated the event was highly successful, with 75 families attending.
