Crossroads School in Devlin will earn the Rainy River District School Board’s monthly “Recognition of Excellence”—for student leadership—during its regular meeting tonight.
A survey taken by Grades 4-8 students during the 2013-14 school year found that those at Crossroads felt “connected” to their school, but there definitely was room for further growth in this area.
Upon reviewing the data, the school began to set the direction of the Community, Culture and Caring goal of the School Improvement Plan.
It focused on increasing student leadership, increasing students’ sense of belongingness, and supporting school connectedness for all students.
“The students and staff of Crossroads [have] worked together to set the priorities for our Community, Culture and Caring goal of our School Improvement Plan,” the report to the board noted.
“We have decided to continue with implementing strategies to increase parent and student engagement.”
Some of the activities the school has implemented include strength assessment surveys, a girls’ club and boys’ drum group, playground leaders (PALS), reading buddies, lunch leaders, Early Years helpers, and student-supported
nutrition (i.e., milk, breakfast, hot lunch), among others.
“These leadership roles, clubs, and whole‐school activities are targeted to engage students of all ages, with different strengths, and bring students together as a school community,” the reported stated.
“The staff and students at Crossroads School have embraced this concept,” it added.
Also at tonight’s meeting, the board will:
•hear a presentation on the Purposeful Use of Technology;
•look to approve the following policies—2.70 (Healthy School Food and Beverage) and 3.46 (Performance Appraisal);
•look to approve the following policies for stakeholder consultation—1.20 (Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee) and 1.07 (Role of the Board Member);
•look to rescind Policy 3.45 (Teacher Performance Appraisal);
•look to approve $1,750,000 from unrestricted accumulated reserve for the enhancement of school grounds/playgrounds and the purchase of library resources, pending Ministry of Education approval;
•look to approve the 2014-15 revised estimates for $50,811,425, pending Ministry of Education approval; and
•consider initiating a School Attendance Zone review for Sturgeon Creek and Riverview.
The meeting gets underway at 7 p.m. at the Education Centre (board office).
The committee of the whole will meet in-camera first at 6:15 p.m.
