Industry Canada still hasn’t made any decisions on its project designed to bring broadband communications to rural and northern areas—despite saying it would do so by Dec. 20.
Industry Canada stated that due to the overwhelming number of applications for the project, and the need to be thorough, it has postponed its deadline for evaluating each submission until January.
Two local groups have submitted applications for funding, which is to go towards developing a business plan for bringing broadband services to the area.
Put simply, the federal government is looking to find out how much it will cost to develop the infrastructure needed.
As previously reported in the Times, one of the applications was submitted by the Rainy River Future Development Corp. for the west end of the district (Emo to Rainy River).
Meanwhile, Ron Allen of Pwi-Di-Goo-Zing-Ne-Yaa-Zhing Non-Profit Advisory Services confirmed it has applied for funding on behalf of seven area First Nations.
