The Canadian Cancer Society’s annual “Daffodil Day” will take place here March 30 this year, but pre-order forms already have been distributed to businesses around town.
Organized by the local chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, orders will be taken until Monday, March 26. Sorority members then will spend the evening of March 29 cutting them in preparation for being delivered to the businesses the following day.
They cost $7 per bunch, or $12 for two bunches.
Daffodils also will be sold at various locations around town, including Einar’s and The Beer Store, as well as Tompkins Hardware in Emo.
Barb MacDonell of Beta Sigma Phi is encouraging everyone to purchase their daffodils as it is possible this will be the final year live flowers are sold for the cause.
“The Canadian Cancer Society is going to be trending away from the live sales to other fundraising methods,” she explained.
“And we’re getting into that ourselves this year, as well as the live daffodils.”
That means paper daffodils and daffodil pins also will be available at local businesses, including McDonald’s and Boston Pizza.
The paper daffodils cost $2 each while people can take a pin by making a donation.
“Those will be on sale for the whole month of April, not just on Daffodil Day, because April is Cancer Month,” MacDonell noted.
Residents are encouraged to wear a pin throughout April to show their support.
The daffodil is the Canadian Cancer Society’s symbol of hope in the fight against cancer.
Money raised goes towards research and support programs for those living with the disease.
