Curves fundraiser a success

A breast cancer awareness fundraiser held two weeks ago at Curves for Women here proved to be a success as the business was able to donate about $600 to the Rainy River District Breast Health Network.
The “Girls’ Night In” promotion, held Oct. 15, was aimed at raising awareness of breast health in the district. It featured draw giveaways, nail-painting, treats, and lots of information about proactive breast health.
Curves manager Arlene Georgeson said the $1 admission, nail-painting by Celeste’s, and new memberships are to thank for the money raised.
Demonstrations of LivAid, a tool which aids in self-breast examination, also were given that evening. The product currently is for sale at Curves for $10, of which $3 from every purchase will go to the local breast health network.
Network chairwoman Teresa Hazel said the support of the community and Curves has been great.
“We’re very appreciative of Curves’ ongoing support of the network,” she enthused. “They have taken a real interest in breast cancer and breast health, and the local network.”
She added many residents have been touched by breast health issues and cancer. “I think the community always steps up to support causes,” she praised.
The Curves’ donation will help the breast health network enact its community work and help get the message out.
Curves has been holding a “Girls’ Night In” fundraiser for a few years now—always in support of the Rainy River District Breast Health Network, which offers the Ontario Breast Screening Program for women age 50 and older.
The program, which can be reached at 274-1900, includes a clinical breast exam by a specially-trained nurse, a mammogram, instructions on self-examination (if desired), and an educational video.
At the same time, the Riverside Breast Education Clinic is a program for women who are younger than 50 years or do not meet the Ontario Breast Screening Program’s criteria.
This program includes self-examination instruction, a clinical breast exam, and a mammogram if needed.
