Curl for Cancer

Aiming to draw 30 teams for the second-annual “Curl for Cancer,” organizers said 24 already have signed up for the March 2 fundraiser at the Fort Frances Curling Club.
“It seems to be going pretty good,” said Nadine Johnson, who is co-organizing the bonspiel again with Wendy Derendorf and Cheryl Behan.
“We’re looking for six more, which we hope to get. But if not, we’ll do it anyway,” she added.
“We knew it would fill up quickly,” noted Behan, who was confident that letting people know there’s only six spots left would spur others to sign up.
Teams can register at the Fort Frances Curling Club, with the entry fee being $80 for a four-person team (which includes a dinner/dance afterwards).
Teams also are being asked to raise at least $100 in pledges.
In fact, Johnson said registered teams already have started collecting pledges as the buzz around the event builds.
“People certainly are talking about it now,” she noted. “But there’s a few people who haven’t picked theirs up yet—some people leave it until the last minute.”
The deadline to submit pledges is Feb. 27.
Like last year, each team will play three four-end games. Teams are awarded a half-point for each point scored, one point for each end won, and three points for each win.
This scoring concept was devised by Tom Fry last year.
Trophies for the top team and most pledges are being donated by Fort Frances General Supply. Draw prizes also will be given away.
The day-long bonspiel, which gets underway at 8:30 a.m., also will feature entertainment by the Rainy Lake Highlanders in the afternoon.
It will conclude with dinner around 6 p.m. and then a dance at 8, with music provided by Adrian Chapman.
For anyone not participating in the bonspiel but still wanting to attend the dinner/dance, tickets are available for $10 each.
