Cracks already showing in underpass paving

Mere weeks after the paving of the Portage Avenue underpass was completed, some cracks already are beginning to show.
Operations and Facilities manager Doug Brown said in an e-mail late Wednesday that the asphalt meets HL4 (or dense hot mix asphalt) specifications, but added, “as you can see, the asphalt is already cracked along all the construction joints.”
These horizontal cracks can be seen about every six metres along the stretch of Portage Avenue from Third Street East to Fifth Street East.
“The town’s consultant is reviewing a fix for this problem and is considering crack sealing all the construction joints,” noted Brown.
The underpass was fully re-opened to two lanes of traffic back on Sept. 2.
