Council will hear three presentations at tonight’s regular meeting, including a petition regarding the proposed elimination of the sidewalk on the north side of the 200 block of Third Street East.
Marlene Deschamps, representing residents of that block, will present a petition to council asking that it not be removed as part of the sewer and water infrastructure work expected to take place there later this year.
There also will be a presentation to chief librarian and library CEO Margaret Sedgwick in recognition of her outstanding leadership as Ontario’s Public Librarian of the Year and recipient of the W.J. Robertson Medallion.
As reported earlier this month, Sedgwick officially was presented with the award Feb. 3 at the annual public library awards dinner held in conjunction with the Ontario Library Association’s annual “Super Conference” (Feb. 2-5).
The third presentation will be from Luke Skaarup of Union Gas Ltd., who will provide an update on the finalization of the natural gas line replacement project in Fort Frances.
The public portion of tonight’s meeting is scheduled to start at 6:25 p.m.
The committee of the whole will meet in-camera first starting at 4:40 p.m.
Other business on the agenda include:
•a report regarding the installation of water and sanitary sewer infrastructure for the development of 10-unit apartment building at 1038 York Ave.;
•a recommendation regarding the Rainy River Future Development Corp.’s request to the town to help pay to repair the electronic readerboard at the border crossing;
•a report regarding the insured value of the property at 850 Williams Ave. (old Huffman School);
•a report regarding a request for expression of interest in the old Fort Frances Public Library building on Church Street;
•a report regarding a municipal appointment to the Northwest Training and Adjustment Board;
•a request from Canadian Red Cross to proclaim March, 2011 as “Red Cross Month” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•a bylaw to impose sewer and water user fees in 2011 (details of the new rates were outlined in last week’s Times); and
•a bylaw to appoint BDO Canada LLP as auditor for the town.
This council meeting originally was scheduled for Feb. 28, but it was moved to today (Feb. 22) due to a risk there may not be a quorum available next Monday.
That’s because several members of council will be attending the annual Ontario Good Roads Association/Rural Ontario Municipal Association conference in Toronto on Feb. 27-March 2.
