Coun. Rick Wiedenhoeft will be heading to Minneapolis next month to help lobby Canadian Consul General Jamshed Merchant for funds for the annual International Tug-of-War here.
Council received an invitation from International Falls Coun. Cynthia Jaksa asking if a representative would like to go on a joint-visit to see Merchant on Nov. 22.
Coun. Wiedenhoeft told council that Coun. Jaksa and Shawn Mason, director of economic and community development for the International Falls Economic Development Authority, went to Minneapolis last year to get Merchant to attend the tug-of-war and help with some financial considerations to offset some of the costs of the event.
“As I am on the tug-of-war committee representing Fort Frances, this year Cynthia Jaksa invited me to go along with her to meet with Jamshed Merchant again, carrying in hand a schedule and a rough budget of our proposed expenditures for this year’s tug-of-war with the hopes of getting . . . more money, or at least an equal amount,” he said.
Merchant contributed $2,000 to the event this past July.
Given Coun. Wiedenhoeft’s ongoing involvement with the cross-border “Pulling for Peace” event, council recommended he attend.
The town will pay for half the travel costs, as well as meals and accommodations for Coun. Wiedenhoeft.
Also at last night’s meeting, council:
•proclaimed Nov. 5-11 as “Poppy Week” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•proclaimed Nov. 6 as “Community Social Service Worker Appreciation Day” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•referred a request from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers for support of resolutions, re: the future of Canada Post, to the Administration and Finance executive committee for its recommendation;
•passed a bylaw to approve a service agreement with Darryl Allan (DA IT Consulting Services) for the provision of information technology services for a period of two years;
•agreed to a proposed grant of easement to Bell Canada over Lot 3, Williams Ave. (Huffman development) and directed an authorizing bylaw be prepared;
•authorized the removal of amending agreements for 1204 Strachan Pl.;
•agreed to a recommendation from the Administration and Finance executive committee that Tannis Drysdale be invited to make a presentation at the Nov. 12 budget meeting re: a proposed Fort Frances Community Foundation; and
•accepted the renewal of municipal insurance provided by BFL Canada, represented by Gillons’ Insurance, for the term of Nov. 1, 2013-Nov. 1, 2014.
