Council to finalize new voting method

Town council will vote tonight on a bylaw to finalize plans to use telephone and Internet voting in the next municipal election, which will be held in October, 2018.
While council approved the use of these new voting methods in late January, the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 requires that a bylaw to authorize alternative voting must be passed and enacted by May 1 in anticipation of next year’s election.
This decision will mean moving away from the vote-by-mail system used in the recent past, and instead allow voters to vote from home or while travelling, as well as during hours to suit their schedules.
Telephone/Internet voting also gives eligible electors with a disability the option to vote utilizing their existing aids (i.e., big-button phone, screen recognition readers, etc.)
Dryden, Kenora, Red Lake, and Sioux Lookout all will be using telephone/Internet voting in next year’s municipal election.
Telephone/Internet voting is not expected to cost the town any more than using the vote-by-mail method.
The committee of the whole will meet first at 5:30 p.m., but will go in-camera for an indefinite length of time to discuss one item (an employment contact).
Other business on tonight’s agenda includes:
•a recommendation re: new Ducks Unlimited signage along the riverfront;
•a report on council remuneration and expenses;
•a new “Dial-a-Ride” agreement;
•a geospatial data share agreement with fire underwriters;
