Council to deny stop sign request

Staff

Town council will vote tonight on a recommendation to deny a request for additional stop signs at the intersection of Minnie Avenue and Fifth Street East.
At its Sept. 11 meeting, council received a letter from a resident requesting the installation of more stops signs at this intersection.
Currently, this intersection is a three-way intersection, with a stop sign for northbound traffic on Minnie Avenue.
After a review by the Traffic Safety Committee, consisting of Milt Strachan and Rick Wiedenhoeft, they felt speeding vehicles are not a concern at this intersection and there’s no recent history of traffic accidents.
But Wiedenhoeft, who also sits on the local Police Services Board, suggested that perhaps council could request the OPP watch this area during their routine patrols to see if there’s a problem with speeding vehicles.
In summary, the Traffic Safety Committee is recommending the request be denied, but also that council send a letter to the Police Services Board to request additional patrols in this area to address the concern of speeding vehicles.
The committee of the whole will meet first at 5:30 p.m., but will go in-camera for an indefinite length of time to discuss two items (potential acquisition of land and a human resources matter).
Other business on the agenda tonight includes:
•an update on capital projects, including the Rainy Lake Square;
•per diem and travel expense claims for the town CAO, mayor, and several members of council who attended the NOMA conference in Thunder Bay last month;
•multiple lease renewal agreements at the Fort Frances Airport;
•minutes of settlement for property located at 1243 Idylwild Dr. for the 2017 taxation year;
•a request from the province for the provision of orthophotographic (aerial photo) data of the town;
•a request for a donation from the CUPE Local #65 Retirement Planning Committee;
•an agreement to renew municipal insurance;
•a draft of a revised animal control bylaw; and
•a recommendation re: taking over the maintenance of the lane on private property to the east of the Legion hall here.
