Town council came close Monday night to passing a resolution to change the name of Front Street–from the mill to just over the overpass–to La Verendrye Parkway.
The resolution, put on the agenda by the Waterfront Development Committee, was about to be passed by council to be put into bylaw form for the next meeting when Coun. Dave Bourgeault noted the public may not have been aware of the change.
“I think we need some sort of public process before we ram this through,” he said.
After a brief discussion, council agreed to table the resolution so the public could be notified.
Also during Monday night’s meeting, council:
•approved a lease agreement with Prairie Communication Ltd. for space on the town’s water tower;
•forwarded a report to the Planning and Development executive committee for review and recommendation to amend the official plan to include the Town of Fort Frances, as a whole, as a Community Improvement, Rene-wal and Revitalization Area in order to proceed with an incentive package for economic development;
•approved a financial contribution of $606.94 to the Northwest-ern Ontario Municipal Association for efforts regarding a Northern Ontario Rural Medical School; and,
•approved that waterfront development costs amounting to roughly $1.6 million be included in the preliminary stages of the 2002 budget process.
