At last night’s regular meeting, town council:
•heard a presentation from Fort Frances Fire Chief Gerry Armstrong regarding Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 4-10), and proclaimed Oct. 4-10 as “Fire Prevention Week” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•presented a plaque of appreciation to Marlene McQuarrie, representing Beta Sigma Phi, for 10 years of dedicated volunteer service at Townshend Theatre;
•was introduced to James McPherson, Northwestern Ontario hub manager for the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA);
•agreed to a request from the Rainy River Valley Safety Coalition to proclaim Oct. 7 as “Safe Communities Day” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•referred a request from Doug Jensen regarding the removal of the private crossing located between 559 and 561 Church St. to the Operations and Facilities executive committee for its recommendation;
•agreed to a request from Lupus Foundation of Ontario to proclaim October as “Lupus Awareness Month” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•referred a letter from the BIA requesting the replacement of flag poles along Mowat Avenue to the Operations and Facilities executive committee for its recommendation;
•referred a letter from the BIA regarding the watering of downtown flower baskets to the Operations and Facilities executive committee for its recommendation;
•referred a request from John. P. Hogan regarding the placement of shrubs at 6 Armstrong Pl. to the Operations and Facilities executive committee for its recommendation;
•passed a bylaw to approve an agreement with Carol Barrell for operation of concessions in the Memorial Sports Centre;
•passed a bylaw to authorize an encroachment agreement with the owner of the property known as 430 Third St. E.;
•passed a bylaw to approve an amendment to an agreement with the minister of Industry Canada, as represented by FedNor, for financing of Heritage Tourism Project Phase II (this was to extend the project completion date to May 31, 2010);
•passed a bylaw to approve a contract with Nortrax Canada Inc. for the purchase of a John Deere model 770G grader (Tender No. 09-OF-08); and
•passed a bylaw to approve a contract awarded to KGS Group for engineering services to complete a study of inflow and infiltration into the town’s sanitary sewer system (Tender 09-OF-12).
