Council fielding requests at final meeting

In what will be its final meeting, town council will be receiving several requests for support tonight.
One request is from the Fort Frances Lions Club, which is asking the town to assist in the building of a proposed walkway at the Lions Millennium Park here.
“The Lions Club is currently working on a new phase of development within the park,” park committee chairman Luke Schill said in a letter to council.
“The plan has been engineered to install a walkway to facilitate access between the handicapped glider swing and the fountain and washroom areas,” he noted.
“The walkways east of the fountain will enable those who are wheelchair bound and the seniors to better enjoy the park amenities.”
Schill said the park committee has costed out the expense of the project, and found the cost of cement and granular materials will be around $20,000.
The Lions Club is asking the town to provide construction expertise and labour in digging out the walkways, place the granular materials, and put in the concrete.
Schill noted the suggested width of the walkways will be two metres to accommodate wheelchairs as well as people meeting and passing each other.
“The Fort Frances Lions Club submits this proposal so that the planning and budgeting committee of the Town of Fort Frances will have time to consider and include this proposal in their deliberations, and hopefully the work will start in the spring,” he added.
Another request is from the Coming Together for Kids Coalition—a district coalition of “health care, social service providers, and consumers whose aim is to support families in the community to attain optimal health.”
The coalition is asking the town for financial support of its car seat donor program—a program to ensure all families in Rainy River District have access to a safe care seat/booster seat.
To date, the program had distributed 39 infant seats and 14 booster seats to families who otherwise would not have been able to afford new and safe seats.
The newly-elected council will be sworn-in next Monday (Dec. 4), and will have two more regular meetings before the end of the year (Dec. 11 and Dec. 18).
Tonight’s meeting is scheduled to start at 6:40 p.m. The committee of the whole will meet first at 5:30, with no items currently on the in-camera agenda.
The public is welcome to attend both meetings.
Other business at tonight’s council meeting will include:
•a break-open ticket licence application from the La Verendrye General Hospital Auxiliary at Bonnie Blue from Nov. 29, 2006-May 29, 2007;
•a request from the Corporation of the Township of Chapple for support of its resolution regarding the condemnation of meat in Rainy River District;
•a bylaw to authorize the sale of certain land to Tom Veert Contracting Ltd. and approve an agreement with Tom Veert Contracting Ltd. regarding the conditions of said land sale;
•a bylaw to de-register Lots 1, 2, 15, and 16 Plan 48M-353 (Eighth Street West); and
