Town council will be asked to financially contribute to several groups and events at its regular meeting tonight.
The first request is from the Rainy River Valley Safety Coalition regarding 2007 per capita funding in the amount of $.50 per capita.
This money would be used “to help sustain the programs already running in the district and to also bring in new programs to help make our community safer for all our children,” RRVSC chair Grace Silander wrote in a letter to the council.
Programs supported by the RRVSC range from car seat clinics to the School Violence Prevention Team, crime prevention for seniors, and the annual “Household Hazardous Waste Day.”
A second financial request to come before council tonight is from the “chem-free” grad committee to waive arena and auditorium rental fees for the 2007 Fort Frances High School “chem-free” grad party on June 21.
The amount waived would total $823 (council has waived this fee in the past).
The town also is receiving a financial request from the Rainy River District Music Festival Association to sponsor the 67th Festival for the Performing Arts.
Donations to this annual event, which takes place in April, helps keep entry fees from going up and ensuring affordable participation by district residents.
Nearly 600 performers took part last year.
Other business at tonight’s meeting will include:
•a request from the Fort Frances Aquanauts Swim Team (this matter was brought before council last month, and now is coming back from the executive committee level with recommendations);
•a request from the local chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society to proclaim April as “Cancer Month” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•a financial request from the Thunder Bay Chronicle Journal regarding advertising in the “Pride of the North” promotional edition;
•a bylaw to approve an agreement with DataFix for web hosting services for purposes of Municipal VoterView;
•a bylaw to approve a contract awarded to JTJ Contracting (Emo) Ltd. for modification to the Portage Avenue underpass (Tender No. 06-OF-14); and
•a bylaw to amend Bylaw No. 66/90 (the motorized snow vehicle bylaw). This amendment is merely to slightly alter the wording of the bylaw.
Tonight’s council meeting is scheduled to start at 6:25 p.m. The committee of the whole will meet first at 5:30, but be in-camera until about 6 p.m.
