Council faces full plate of requests

While town council is expected to further discuss the 2004 budget during Monday night’s regular meeting, that’s not the only thing on its platter as non-budget related items keep on coming down the line, too.
For example, council will receive a request from the Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi for permission to install a swing at Lions’ Park.
The sorority has raised money through its annual fundraisers (Sweetheart Baby contest, etc.) and is planning to use it to purchase a swing for special needs children this year.
In another instance, the Rainy River Valley Field Naturalists is asking the town to waive certain tipping fees for them.
As the group is active every year doing roadside clean-ups, as well as clean-ups at the boat launches in the eastern “gateway” to town, it is asking for six certificates to waive the tipping fee which otherwise is required for use of the landfill.
Other requests include one from the Canadian Cancer Society regarding the rental of facilities at Pither’s Point Park on June 25-26 for its “Relay for Life” fundraiser and one from The Salvation Army to proclaim May as “The Salvation Army Red Shield Month” in Fort Frances.
Yet another from the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce is for the town to continue to water the flowers it will hang up as part of its beautification program.
Committee of the whole first will meet downstairs in-camera from 5:30-5:45 p.m., and then go to the Council Chamber to finished the public portion of their meeting from 5:50-6:35 p.m.
The council meeting then will begin at 6:40 p.m. and is expected to wrap up by 7:15 p.m.
Other business at Monday night’s council meeting will include:
•invoices for service from the Rainy River Future Development Corp.;
•a break-open ticket licence application for the Rainycrest Home for the Aged Auxiliary at the 364 Store from May 1, 2004-April 30, 2005;
•a request from Dave and Angela Petsnick regarding the purchase of surplus lots;
•a nomination request from the Ontario Crime Control Commission for its 2004 Awards of Excellence for Fighting Crime;
•the third reading and passing of a bylaw to amend a zoning bylaw for property at 1305 Mill Rd., which will be used for a new Calvary Tabernacle church;
•a bylaw to de-register Lots 39 and 40 on Plan 48M-368 (820 Kaitlyn Dr.); and
•Planning and Development reports regarding zoning amendments at 515-525 Colonization Rd. E. and 815 Williams Ave.
