Unattended cooking was to blame for a house fire late yesterday afternoon.
The Fort Frances Fire and Rescue Service were called to a residence on the 400 block of Second Street East to extinguish the fire, which was limited to the kitchen stove and immediate area.
There was minor fire damage to the cupboards and exhaust fan, as well as minor smoke damage to the home.
Firefighters were on the scene from about 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The block also was temporarily blocked off.
Fire prevention captain Wayne Riches reminded the public to keep an eye on cooking areas when in use, especially when heating up oil.
“The number-one cause of fires is careless cooking,” he noted.
“That’s how it’s been here over the last little while,” added Capt. Riches.
“If you look at the fires we’ve had over the last six months, the majority of them seem to be related to cooking.”
