Canada Border Services Agency officers at the Pigeon River border crossing have made their largest seizure of contraband cigarettes in the past year.
On Feb. 23, a 53-year-old man from Stony Plain, Alta., on his way to Alberta, had his vehicle examined while attempting to re-enter Canada at the port of Pigeon River.
During the examination, 20 boxes of unmarked and bagged cigarettes—the equivalent of 200,000 cigarettes—were found.
The man was charged with possession of illegally-imported goods and evading compliance under the Customs Act.
The cigarettes were seized and the man was released pending an April 20 court appearance.
CBSA officers at the port of Pigeon River have made eight seizures of cigarettes in the last 12 months, including 150,000 cigarettes last March.
