Conservative candidate steps forward

One candidate has stepped forward to vie for the Conservative nomination in the new Thunder Bay-Rainy River riding, but people can expect at least one more—and possibly two—throw their hats into the ring by the end of this week.
“We will have a contested nomination,” riding association president Richard Neumann said yesterday.
David Leskowski officially has filed his nomination papers to represent the new Conservative Party of Canada in Thunder Bay-Rainy River.
Leskowski ran under the Alliance banner in the former riding of Thunder Bay-Atikokan in the last federal election in 2000, where he won 29 percent of the vote behind Liberal incumbent Stan Dromisky.
Leskowski also is co-chair of the constitution committee on the new party’s interim council, which is responsible for running the party until its first leader is elected next Saturday (March 20).
Neumann said a second candidate already has filed their papers while a third person may file before the end of the week.
The party will hold a nomination meeting at the Emo Legion on March 26 at 7 p.m. and a second the following day in Thunder Bay.
