A local company is asking permission from town council to use the waterways, public docks, and beaches surrounding the town for the operation of its water sports business.
“We are aware that these are public waterways, and assure you that we will be mindful and respectful of the other water [users and] beach-goers,” Shawna McRitchie and Marjan Fraczkiewicz of Sunset Water Sports wrote in a letter received by council at its regular meeting Monday night.
They noted their operations will not interfere with other organizations such as the Boundary Waters Dragon Boat Club or Rusty Myers Flying Service.
“We will be purchasing a season pass to launch from the marina and would greatly appreciate your support in allowing us the use of the waterways for our daily operations,” the pair added.
Council referred the request to the Community Services executive committee for its recommendation.
Also at Monday evening’s meeting, council:
•agreed to ensure the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the installation of portable piping systems during an extreme wet weather event be approved;
•approved the request of Rainy Lake Tribal Resource Management to operate an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) on town land during the Dragon Boat Festival (July 8) and “Canadian Coasters” visit (July 19 and 20).
•endorsed charging regular admission fees to the lookout tower, Sorting Gap Marina, “Hallett,” and museum for the car club participants during the “Canadian Coasters” event here in July;
•agreed to ensure $154,170.23 be taken from the water and sewer reserve fund, and to reduce the funding allocation from the Federal Gas Tax Revenue reserve fund in the amount of $154,170.23, to fund the 2016/17 Colonization Road East reconstruction project;
•passed a bylaw to approve a contribution agreement for funding for improvements to the Fort Frances Museum and Cultural Centre (this funding, along with funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s Ontario 150 Community Capital Program, will be used to replace the museum’s roof, install a ramp, and make accessibility upgrades to the washrooms); and
•passed a bylaw to approve a transfer payment agreement for funding for the replacement of water and sanitary sewer mains along Second Street East.
