More than 60 workers from the Fort Frances & District Association of Community Living, CUPE #65, went on strike Friday morning.
The Community Activity Centre, access centre, and administration offices were being picketed today as the employees walked off the job to back demands for better wages and a pension plan.
The union’s grievances will top the agenda during an in-camera session of the committee of the whole of council on Monday night
The committee of the whole also will discuss the proposed new Canada Customs facility here, the “Welcome to Fort Frances” sign at the border, the feasibility of purchasing new municipal software, and the possibility of free tipping days at the town landfill site.
It also will receive a verbal update from CAO Bill Naturkach on the proposed condominium project along Front Street.
During the regular meeting later Monday, council will receive a verbal report on activity of the OPP from S/Sgt. Hugh Dennis as well as the 2000 annual report from the Fort Frances Fire and Rescue Services.
Council also will receive a letter from the Northern Action Group, which is concerned about the condition of Front Street, and a request from Riverside Health Care Facilities Inc. that the town proclaim May 6-13 as the National Nurses Week in Fort Frances.
