‘Community Chest’ names car winner

Yvette Lauzon of Fort Frances was the lucky winner of the “Community Chest’s” Canada Day draw made July 1 at La Place Rendez-Vous.
Lauzon won a 2006 Chevrolet Aveo Lt Sedan (valued at $20,100).
Linda Hamilton, a member of the “Community Chest” committee, said yesterday that organizers sold about 1,500 tickets for the raffle—making a small profit.
A total of 3,000 tickets were printed.
This raffle marked the “Community Chest’s” fundraiser wind-up with Canada Safeway, which adopted it for its “We Care” campaign charity for 2005-06.
In related news, this year’s “We Care” campaign proved to be very successful for the local store and charity, raising more than $52,000 with a series of raffles and barbecues.
This was the most raised in Northwestern Ontario— and the second-most of any total raised in the country.
Safeway charity campaign captain Vilma Valenzuela, who said she’s probably stepping down from her role when the store picks its chosen charity again this fall, credited teamwork and district residents for making this year another success.
“The community is the one that comes together,” she remarked.
The “Community Chest” is a fund to help district families facing medical expenses. It is comprised of members of the local Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis, and Lions clubs, the “Spirit of Christmas” committee, and Legion Ladies Auxiliary Br. #29.
Last year, the “Community Chest” gave out 157 cheques to individuals in need totalling $69,458.53.
