Coming up on council tonight

Tonight will be the first meeting of the month for the Fort Frances council. The second and final one of the month will be on April 26.

During council, a meeting will be held for the purpose of providing information to the public on proposed amendments to the zoning bylaw relative to an application received from the Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board (RRDSSAB).

The application submitted by RRDSSAB requested an amendment to the zoning bylaw for 820 Fifth St. East from Institutional (I) to Residential Type Two (R2), with a site-specific accessory use as a day nursery.

The approval to amend the zoning bylaw would see the former St. Michael’s School renovated to encompass up to five eight-plex housing units for seniors, along with the EarlyON day nursery.

Tonight’s public portion of the meeting will give all parties the chance to make comments and identify issues on the proposed amendments.

Council is also expected to formally approve the Flint House’s request to place a food truck by the waterfront. Approval of this request does not guarantee the sale of liquor; the town decided to wait until the request for proposal to rent the Sorting Gap Marina closes tomorrow.

If the business renting the Marina wants to include the sale of liquor in their offerings, it is likely that the Flint House truck will be limited to the sale of foods and non-alcoholic beverages. This stance came as a result of the Planning and Executive meeting last week when chief administrative officer, Doug Brown, said they should not have two businesses offering liquor in close proximity because it creates competition.

Council will also decide on whether to approve the bylaw to authorize the renewal lease agreement with Perimeter Airlines EIC Shared Services at the Fort Frances Municipal Airport.

Town council meetings are open to the public online through the Microsoft Teams platform or the public can phone-in. To access a town council meeting, follow the instructions at the top of the agenda you would like to attend, posted at www.fortfrances.ca or call 807-274-5323 for assistance.
