Press Release
In December, Sharon Greshuk received a sweet Christmas surprise–she was presented with a $1,000 scholarship for winning the 2008 Shinerama Shinerific Draw.
The Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Thunder Bay Chapter and Mac’s Convenience Stores Inc. (Ontario Division) presented the cheque to Greshuk, who won the prize in the Shinerific Draw—a contest open to all students who participate in the Foundation’s 2008 Shinerama campaign.
Shinerama is Canada’s largest post-secondary school fundraiser, with students from more than 65 university and college campuses raising funds in support of the CCFF.
While Shinerama began in 1964 as a shoe-shining campaign during Orientation Week, it has since grown to include a wide variety of events such as raffles, barbecues, and car washes.
This is the first year students at Confederation College took part in the annual fundraiser. Hundreds of students hit the streets on “Shine Day” and raised more than $2,400 in support of the Foundation.
The 2008 Shinerama campaign, in which more than 35,000 students participated from coast to coast, raised more than $940,000 for CCFF-funded research and care.
“We believe that investing in Canada’s young people is an integral part in nurturing the leaders of tomorrow,” said Bruce Watson, director of Customer Relations, Central Canada, for Mac’s Convenience Stores Inc.
“Mac’s is proud to be a sponsor of the Shinerama campaign, and the Foundation’s partner in the fight against cystic fibrosis.”
“We are very happy to be part of this event,” noted Laura McFarland, president of the Student Union of Confederation College Inc.
“It is a win/win situation for everyone since the students make lifelong friends all the while giving back to their community,” she added.
