In an effort to give town residents a chance to do a little cleaning up before the snow is here to stay, the town will waive tipping fees at the local landfill this Saturday (Nov. 2) from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
But the only waste to be accepted free of charge that day will be leaves, tree branches, grass clippings, and garden waste.
These items must be separate from regular waste when brought to the landfill.
As well, all material must be disposed of in compliance with the instructions from the landfill gate attendant.
In related news, town council is taking up the United Native Friendship Centre on its offer to perform a park clean-up in Fort Frances.
But due to the weather already turning wintery, the town has asked the UNFC to
postpone cleaning up park areas until Earth Day 2014, which will take place on Tuesday, April 22.
The town’s workforce will provide assistance to the UNFC during the clean-up, such as collecting and transporting filled plastic garbage bags from the clean-up event sites to the landfill.
In a letter received at its Oct. 15 meeting, youth justice worker Lana Smith told council that the UNFC has several community-based programs, such as alternative education, Wasa-Nabin, Akwe:go, and the Youth Justice Program.
The programs have been collaborating on ways to foster better working relationships and make more of a contribution to the community.
A clean-up would be just such an opportunity, Smith wrote.
