‘Clean Sweep’ postponed to May 9

Citing poor weather, the local Business Improvement Area cancelled its “Clean Sweep” event planned for Thursday and rescheduled it for next Thursday.
“Cloudy skies, snow in Kenora and Dryden and here. And you know what bugs me, I can look outside today and I see the sun is out,” BIA chair Ted DeBenetti said Friday morning, adding Mother Nature is notorious for throwing a wrench into the best-laid plans.
The purpose of this “spring cleaning” event is for the public to come down to Scott Street and help business owners sweep clean the sidewalks.
Service clubs, organizations, families, and even high school students who need to accumulate volunteer hours are all welcome to come out next Thursday at 5 p.m. and sweep for an hour or so.
Since sweeping can be hard work, the Rainy Lake Hotel and Robin’s Donuts are pitching in with coffee, juice, and doughnuts for all participants.
Those turning out will be asked to sweep off the sidewalks, pushing any garbage onto the street. Public Works street cleaners then will be out the next morning to clear away the dirt and debris.
Depending on its success, “Clean Sweep” could become an annual event.
The idea came from local BIA reps who attended the inaugural meeting of the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association back in March.
