Chronic disease symposium is for everyone

Organizers of the first-ever Chronic Disease Management Symposium, coming up next Saturday (March 29), are encouraging all residents to come out and learn about chronic disease management.
The symposium will run from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Memorial Sports Centre auditorium.
“It’s not just for those who already have a chronic disease,” stressed Patti-Jo Ledrew, a registered nurse at the Fort Frances Community Clinic who is charged with overseeing the local Chronic Disease Management program.
“The exhibits and presentations are aimed at helping people who may be at risk for developing a chronic disease, and also for people and their families who are managing a chronic disease,” she noted.
“The information about prevention strategies and healthy lifestyles will be helpful for everyone,” Ledrew added.
Health-care professionals and exhibitors will be on hand to discuss topics such as “Healthy Eating Using the Portion Plate,” “Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Hypertension, and Your Kidneys,” “Smoking Cessation,” the “Healthy Living Food Box,” “Substance Abuse,” and “Dental Care.”
A full slate of presenters also has been lined up to provide 15-minute information sessions on how to talk to your doctor, medication safety, eye health, resistance exercise, and motivational exercise.
The information sessions get underway at noon.
“Many organizations have come together to provide this comprehensive symposium,” noted Ledrew.
“It’s going to be a great opportunity for the general public to gather a lot of helpful information and have access to a diverse group of health-care professionals.
“It will be well worth it for those who attend!” she enthused.
Admission is free, and a free lunch will be provided for the first 200 people. There also will be giveaways and draw prizes for those who attend.
