Christmas dinner needs more food

The annual community Christmas dinner is in need of more food donations.
Fort Frances Volunteer Bureau co-ordinator Tori Hebert, who is spearheading the event with her grandmother, Karen Mitchell, said they’re hoping to get a big boost in supplies this Saturday through the OPP’s annual “Stuff-a-Cruiser” campaign.
But as of right now, quite a bit of food is needed, including turkeys, hams, frozen veggies, buns, cheese, gravy, pickles, and desserts.
Coffee and tea also are in short supply.
Hebert said some generous support already has come forth from the community.
“BP [Boston Pizza] has offered to donate enough salad for everybody, so we’re already good for salad,” she noted.
“CN has donated 100 boxes of stuffing,” she added. “And we’ve got cranberries, tons of cranberries.”
Monetary donations also are welcome and will be used to by food or supplies that aren’t donated.
Hebert is hoping McDonald’s once again will provide credit at J.N. Webb & Sons Ltd. so organizers can get items like individual butter packets.
Meanwhile, Hebert said she has quite a few volunteers lined up for the dinner, including local MP John Rafferty.
But more helping hands always are welcome.
“If they have a vehicle and a licence, they might be asked to drive for ‘Meals on Wheels,’” noted Hebert.
She added volunteers also can help set up plates for “Meals on Wheels,” set up and decorate the curling club on Dec. 24, serve food at the dinner, or clean up afterwards.
The Christmas dinner will take place Dec. 25 from noon-2 p.m. at the Fort Frances Curling Club.
Everyone is welcome to attend the free event.
