Christmas cantata in the works again

Music lovers will be happy to hear the Christmas cantata once again is being planned for the holiday season.
Organizer Diane Maxey, who has conducted cantatas here for more than 10 years, said last week that those interested in participating should come out to the first practice this Monday (Nov. 1) at 7 p.m. in the basement of St. Mary’s Church.
“Anyone who wants to sing can come out,” she noted. “This first session will really be one for listening to the music.”
Practices will be held every Monday after leading up to the actual concert in December.
Maxey said there’s no minimum or maximum number of choraliers needed, as she’s done cantatas with between 50 and 80 people. Teens, adults, and seniors are welcome to participate.
This year’s cantata tentatively is scheduled for either Dec. 12 or 19, depending on choraliers’ schedules, added Maxey.
This year’s cantata is entitled “Bethlehem Morning,” which is described as “a timeless musical for Christmas” on the cover of the songbook.
“It’s really pretty,” said Maxey, adding it’s the first time she’s directed this particular cantata.
If there’s enough interest from parents, Maxey also said she’d be willing to organize a Christmas concert strictly for children this year.
