Christmas cantata in the works again

After having to cancel the event last year due to a throat ailment, Diane Maxey is looking to revive the Christmas cantata that has been a local tradition for more than 10 years.
And the first meeting for this year’s event is slated tomorrow (Nov. 13) at 7 p.m. in the basement of St. Mary’s Church.
“I’m encouraging those that have participated before to come out again,” said Maxey, who has directed the cantata for 11 years.
“I realize time is short, [but] I want to be able to get ready for the performance on Dec. 14,” she added, noting new voices also are welcome.
Maxey said there’s no minimum or maximum number of choraliers needed, as she’s done cantatas with a little as 40 people and as many as 80. Teens, adults, and seniors are welcome to participate.
Due to the limited availability of chorus books, Maxey noted the cantata will be one they have performed before.
She’s decided to do “Sing of the Wonder,” and if any previous choraliers have the program from that cantata, they’re asked to bring it along tomorrow night.
A practice schedule will be determined at tomorrow’s meeting.
Maxey’s last project was directing the adult and children’s choirs that performed during the World Health Organization’s “Safe Communities” conference here in May, 2002.
The 2001 cantata, “Hope Was Born,” involved about 70 singers from across the district and drew more than 200 people to St. Mary’s for its performance.
