Children’s Complex switching to electric heat

After a situation with a gas leak last month, town council Monday night authorized the installation of electric heaters in the Fort Frances Children’s Complex, and replacement of the gas hot water tank, at an estimated cost of $3,263.
“As council is aware, the heat exchanger in the gas-fired furnace at the Children’s Complex failed in early January, creating a dangerous environment [and] causing the evacuation of the facility,” Community Services manager George Bell said in a report to council.
He added the furnace has a cracked heat exchange, requiring it to be repaired or replaced.
Council gave the go-ahead to install three fan force electric heaters in the central play area and change area. This will allow for continued use of the main furnace as an air handler only.
The makeup air handlers and air conditioning unit would operate as normal. The gas line would be disconnected and capped.
In addition, the gas hot water tank would be replaced with a 40-gallon electric hot water tank. A comparison between gas and electric costs will follow.
“If the electric heat solution proves to be inadequate or not cost-effective, we could pursue DSSAB funding under the health and safety program to replace the unit with smaller, forced-air units,” noted Bell.
Also at Monday night’s meeting, council:
•appointed Jeff Wiume and Jill Colquhoun to the Community Control Group, Sybil Mowe to the Accessibility Advisory Committee, and Kristen McFarlane to the Children’s Complex Advisory Committee;
•directed that a letter be sent to Premier Dalton McGuinty indicating the Town of Fort Frances supports the findings and recommendations of the final report of the nuisance bear committee (this is in response to a request from the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters);
•approved entering into a contract with DataFix for purposes of utilizing the Municipal Voter View software application 2004 through 2006 at a total cost of $3,480 (plus GST), and directed the clerk to prepare an authorizing bylaw; and
•authorized to renew the corporation’s membership to the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce at a cost of $208.65 (inclusive of all fees and taxes).
