Something new to this year’s “Relay for Life,” organizers are looking for area youth to sing at the fundraiser’s opening ceremonies on June 16 here.
Choral directors Diane Maxey and Louise Kahler are encouraging boys and girls who can sing to come to the first practice on Saturday, May 6 at 10 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church (1105 Scott St.)
Maxey said this week she’d like to see children aged seven-14 come out for this choir practice as she’d like to get them involved in rehearsals with plenty of time prior to the event.
She noted choir experience isn’t necessary, but enthusiasm and at least some skill is a must.
“I’d like to get children who really like to sing and would have fun doing this,” Maxey enthused. “Children who perhaps have sung in a choir before, or who would like to.
“They should have a joy of singing,” she added. “I do understand not too many seven-year-olds have experience being in choirs.”
Maxey said she’d love to see a choir of at least 20-25 youth. They’ll be expected to sing four or five numbers—a couple of which will feature two-part harmonies.
She also stressed she wants to see boys get involved in the choir.
“There are some boys out there who have great voices,” remarked Maxey. “If we could only get them out there singing.”
Maxey hinted this choir will be a sort of prelude to what she plans to get off the ground next year—a permanent children’s community choir.
More details about the performance will be available closer to the “Relay for Life.”
