Charity bike ride to make return

Press Release

Following an overwhelming community response to our inaugural ride, the Caribou Charity Ride is ramping up for another great day in the saddle on Sunday, Sept. 12 in Thunder Bay.
The ride was created to motivate all kinds of people—mothers, fathers, grandparents, teens, friends, and cancer survivors—to set a modest challenge for themselves while helping the Northern Cancer Fund to bring the best in patient care, education, and prevention to Northwestern Ontario.
The registration fee of $65 includes an event T-shirt, a post-ride lunch, and $10 Thunder Bay Community Auditorium gift certificate.
As well, all ride kits include an entry ballot to win a 2011 Trek Madone 4.5.
And if you register online before Aug. 15, you’ll get a tasty $25 Caribou Restaurant gift certificate and the chance to win a flight for two anywhere WestJet flies.
Don’t delay—ride numbers are capped at the first 350 paid entries.
“We were absolutely thrilled to raise $10,000 last year,” said Bob Stewart, co-owner and manager of the Caribou Restaurant in Thunder Bay and an avid rider himself.
“The way things are shaping up right now, we hope to double that donation this year,” he added.
Dave Pinner, president of the Thunder Bay Cycling Club and one of the event organizers, has been bowled over by community response.
“Last year was our first year and we expected 75-100 riders,” he noted.
“When over 250 people signed up, it exceeded our highest expectations.
“But the best part was giving back to the Northern Cancer Fund,” Pinner added.
“They touch so many lives each year, and it was tremendous to see our sponsors and the community pulling together to support such a worthy cause.”
All you need is a bike, a helmet (Snell or ANSI certified), determination, and the desire to have a good time.
The Caribou Charity Ride welcomes everyone—from weekend warriors and active commuters to accomplished cyclists.
Participants can choose from a 50-km or a 100-km distance.
The ride gathers at the Best Western Nor’Wester Resort Hotel at 2080 Highway 61, where both distances will ride out through the rolling hills of Oliver-Paipoonge municipality near Thunder Bay.
