Charge laid in teen’s murder

Bronson Green, 20, of Naicatchewenin First Nation (Northwest Bay) was charged by the Treaty #3 Police Service with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Ashley Smith, 18, also of Naicatchewenin.
Green was slated to appear in court here today.
Smith’s body was found in the bush near the main community road on Naicatchewenin in the early-morning hours of Saturday, Oct. 27.
A post-mortem examination was conducted at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora. Police are not prepared to release the cause of death.
Treaty #3 Police Service, the OPP North West Region Crime Unit, and OPP Forensic Identification Unit are conducting the investigation under the direction of Det. Insp. Dennis Olinyk, with the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch out of Kenora.

Clarification:
A Treaty #3 Police Service press release issued last week identified the man charged in the murder of Naicatchewenin First Nation resident Ashley Smith as Bronson Green, 20, of Naicatchewenin.
However, a band member phoned the Times yesterday to say while the accused resided at Naicatchewenin, he actually was a band member of Shoal Lake First Nation, not Naicatchewenin as the press release implied.
