In an effort to better inform its members on matters relevant to business, the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce is going to have guest speakers at each of its monthly luncheons, Chamber coordinator Dawn Booth said yesterday.
“This something new we’re trying this year,” she noted, adding the Chamber will continue to have two meetings a month—the first being a business meeting and the second a luncheon with a guest speaker.
“It’s basically a way to get our Chamber members out more and involved a little more,” she added.
Chamber member Brian Kahler, as chair of the Chamber’s luncheon sub-committee, is responsible for lining up guests for every fourth Tuesday of each month, Booth noted.
“We felt we weren’t doing a good enough job when it came to the education and mentoring aspect of being a Chamber of Commerce,” Kahler remarked, referring to the need for guest speakers at Chamber functions.
The first of these guest speakers will be Fort Frances OPP Cst.
Dereck McLean at the Tuesday, Jan. 27. luncheon, which starts at 11:45 a.m. at La Place Rendez- Vous.
McLean’s presentation will focus on the topic of credit card and debit card fraud—a growing concern of many business people, said Booth.
He’s also expected to speak about identity theft.
Although these luncheons are normally restricted to Chamber members, this first one will be open to local residents who are considering joining the Chamber and may want to see what it has to offer.
“It’s a bit of a membership drive,” said Kahler. “One of our goals for this year is to increase our membership by 10 percent.”^Those interested in attending can register by dropping by the Chamber office (474 Scott St.) or calling 274-5773 prior to noon this Friday (Jan. 23).
Guest speakers for future luncheons will be announced on a regular basis.
