Celtic music at heart of next tour de Fort concert

“It’s time to party Celtic style.”
That’s how tour de Fort organizers are describing the mood expected at the Townshend Theatre here Saturday night when Celtic band “Scruj” of Winnipeg takes to the stage.
The concert, which starts at 7:30 p.m., is sold out to passport holders.
“‘Scruj’ is a really upbeat group with a lot of energy [and] they make you want to dance,” tour de Fort president Wendy Brunetta enthused earlier this week.
“We seem to have a demand within our audience for Celtic music [and] this is our one Celtic show of the season,” she noted.
The six-member band features Ruth Moody (vocals, piano, and bodhran), Jeremy Walsh (guitar), Jeremy Penner (harmony vocals and fiddle), Leonard Podolak (banjo and vocals), Oliver Swain (bass fiddle and vocals), and Christian Dugas (percussion and vocals).
“It’s good toe-tapping, Celtic, Appalachian, and bluegrass music,” agreed Wanda Botsford, publicity co-ordinator for tour de Fort.
“They play traditional songs, jigs, and shanties from Ireland, Scotland, and Newfoundland, with some high-powered fiddle playing,” she added.
“Scruj” has been highlighted at folk festivals in Winnipeg and Regina, as well as at the Labatt Brier, Grey Cup ’98, and Epcot Centre at Walt Disney World in Florida.
In related news, $671.80 was raised for the John Leishman Memorial Scholarship during the “Farmer’s Daughter” concert here in February.
This post-secondary scholarship is for a student pursuing the field of medicine.
