Caution urged with campfires, grass fires

There are no active fires in the West Fire Region at this time, the Ministry of Natural Resources reported this morning.
Cool weather and recent rain has kept the fire hazard “low-moderate,” although the potential remains for a new fire start as recreational activity increases and people continue to set brush and grass fires to clean up around their rural homes and cottages.
The most recent fires in the West Fire Region were reported on Wednesday, including Sioux Lookout Fire #5 early that morning. The fire was 0.1 ha in size, and was extinguished by FireRangers from the Pickle Lake attack base.
Meanwhile, Kenora Fire #19 was confirmed Wednesday afternoon near the community of Wabaseemoong. FireRangers responded and through quick action and hard work, brought the blaze under control by 2 p.m.
The West Fire Region has seen a total of 47 fires to date, consuming 51 ha.
The public is reminded that, under the Forest Fires Prevention Act of Ontario, day burning of brush or grass is not allowed.
People may start a fire no sooner than two hours before sunset and they must put it out no later than two hours after sunrise.
Choosing a safe site, keeping the fire small and never leaving it unattended, and ensuring the fire is dead out before leaving the site all are safe burning guidelines.
People living in a municipality should check local bylaws for any burning restrictions that may apply.
