Press Release
The Fort Frances Fire & Rescue Service responded to the report of a fire at the kraft mill here shortly after 8 a.m. on Friday.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed heavy smoke coming from the roof area of the seventh floor on the north side of the building.
The fire sprinklers in the building had activated, which assisted in containing the fire to the building.
The fire was brought under control around 11 a.m.
Deep snow and other debris on the roof hampered firefighters as they had to remove large sections of the roof where fire had extended and was continuing to burn in the roof insulation.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damage estimates have not determined.
Fire crews were on scene for about 12 hours.
Mill manager John Harrison said this morning the fire resulted in the loss of about one workday for the kraft mill, which was back in operation over the weekend.
