Cause of effulent leak still unknown

The cause of the effluent line leak at the corner of Central Avenue and Fourth Street West last Tuesday (May 10) is still under investigation, Abitibi-Consolidated mill manager John Harrison said yesterday.
The leak, which the mill was notified of around 10:20 a.m. that day, was flowing at roughly 100 gallons/minute into a storm sewer on Fourth Street West by the old CN station.
All three paper machines at the mill were shut down immediately and the flow from the leak stopped within 40 minutes of notification.
The kraft mill already had been shut down for annual maintenance.
Repairs to the line began immediately and were completed in less than two days.
Harrison noted the three paper machines were restarted as soon those repairs were done.
The mill lost about one day of paper production during the repairs, he added.
