At its March meeting, the Northwest Catholic District School Board was pleased to honour St. Francis teachers Solange Busch, Colette Fafard, and Lisa George.
Student Emily Hyatt, who is president of the student council at St. Francis, also was recognized for her leadership
Busch, the Grade 4/5 French Immersion teacher, was recognized for her work as the “Student Vote” team leader for St. Francis School in leading the junior division students through the election process within Canada.
As part of the social studies curriculum, students learned about the democratic process, political parties, and local candidates.
In recognition of the success of the program, board chair Anne-Marie Fitzgerald presented Busch with a certificate from the “Student Vote” organization and a certificate of recognition from the Board.
Meanwhile, George and Fafard have been actively involved in working with the student council to promote various student activities.
This year, they received a grant for $1,500 from the “Speak Up” project. The funds have been used to promote various activities that encouraged student leadership, engaged students in learning, and promoted school spirit.
Finally, Hyatt was recognized for her role as president of the student council.
In her role, and through her participation in the Ontario Student Voice program, Hyatt prepared and submitted a proposal for funding and received a grant for $400.
This money were used to fund a winter carnival at St. Francis. Members of the student council acted as team leaders and all students participated.
Future activities planned by the student council include assemblies, prayer services, and distributing school spirit bracelets to promote Catholic values throughout the school.
