Catholic board set to discuss secondary options

Catholic secondary education once again will be on the agenda when the Northwest Catholic District School Board meets Saturday morning.
The board will review provincial legislation regarding religious education in public schools as well as hear comments from the director of education for the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board.
The board sought advice from the director of this board in eastern Ontario because it also serves a wide area with a dispersed population.
That board does not have its own Catholic high school, but has worked out a partnership with the local public board to provide religious education courses at the public high school.
Also Saturday, the board will discuss a letter to the Education minister Gerard Kennedy regarding the proposed transportation funding model.
The local Catholic board is expecting to lose roughly 5.7 percent of its funding while its co-terminus boards—the Keewatin-Patricia and Rainy River District School Boards—are expecting to receive funding increases of about 35 percent and 22 percent, respectively.
The board will vote on a motion to send a letter to the minister asking him to reconsider the implementation of the grant reduction.
But as the first order of business at Saturday’s meeting, the board will elect a chair and vice-chair for the coming year. The current chair is Fort Frances trustee Gerry Rousseau while the vice-chair is Dryden trustee Robert vanOort.
The meeting starts at 10:30 a.m. in the library at St. Francis School.
