Two local projects—the subdivision development at the former Huffman School site and reconstruction of Second Street East between Mowat and Central—are moving along well, Operations and Facilities manager Doug Brown reported at last night’s council meeting.
“Over the last two weeks, most of the work has been done on sanitary sewer,” Brown said of the subdivision development.
He noted crews have installed sanitary sewer between the working zone and the corner of Williams Avenue and Fifth Street East, and have cut into the sanitary manhole at that intersection.
He added they also have installed 119.8 metres of 10-inch sanitary sewer and two new sanitary manholes along Williams Avenue.
Brown said most of the foundation of Huffman School also has been removed.
“We’ve been stockpiling material from the road bed on the Huffman School property,” he explained, though adding it’s not going to stay like that.
Meanwhile, Brown said the work on Second Street East and Mowat Avenue continues to progress.
Sanitary sewer has been installed along the street, in addition to three sanitary service lines and water lines for 202 and 204 Second St. E. and at the Auto Spa car wash.
“All the sanitary sewer work along Second Street is complete,” said Brown, noting 204 metres of six-inch watermain also has been installed, as well as one insolation valve.
“What’s left to go is we’re starting work in the intersection of Mowat and Second for installing all the catch basins and sanitary systems tying into it,” Brown explained, adding they also have to put the materials back into Second Street.
He noted they must complete the work on Second Street East before they can move to Mowat Avenue between Second and Third Street East.
“But both jobs are proceeding well,” Brown stressed.
Also at last night’s meeting, council:
•passed a bylaw to authorize the entering into a collective agreement with the Fort Frances Professional Fire Fighters Association for a three-year period from Jan. 1, 2013-Dec. 31, 2015 (this includes a 4.5 percent salary hike over the three years);
•passed a bylaw to amend the zoning bylaw in regards to making the community garden at Lillie Avenue and Elizabeth Street West a permanent site;
•passed a bylaw to amend the Traffic Control Bylaw to provide for traffic controls to accommodate the new “Kiss ’n Ride” student transportation program at St. Francis, J.W. Walker and Robert Moore schools, to establish a loading zone on Butler Avenue for the UNFC’s “Head Start” program, and to reinstate full calendar parking on a portion of Fourth Street West;
•received activity reports from the Administration and Finance, Community Service, Operations and Facilities, and Planning and Development executive committees;
•agreed to support the Alzheimer Society of Sudbury-Manitoulin’s resolution in support of a national dementia strategy;
•approved a request from the Northwestern Ontario Emerald Ash Borer Task Force to erect two signs; and
•directed that the town enter into a new limousine agreement with Kevin and Lisa Pocock (North Air Services), and directed that a bylaw be created.
