Town bylaw enforcement officer Arlene “Plum” Byrnes recently received the Municipal Law Enforcement Officers Association’s Long-Service Medal for 20 years of service.
Council acknowledged letters of notification and congratulations as part of its agenda at Tuesday night’s regular meeting.
Also at that meeting, council:
•denied a request from Skyview Apartment Building for an exemption from the new $4/month Environmental Fee;
•approved a report to authorize administration to purchase 4,692 dozen flower from Lowey’s Greenhouse & Market Gardens, at a cost of $11,682 (plus taxes), to supply Parks and Cemeteries in 2014;
•approved site plan control agreement certificates of final acceptance/release of security for Canadian Tire and Boston Pizza;
•approved a travel expense claim for Fort Frances CAO Mark McCaig in the amount of $116 (for attendance at Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association regional conference Sept. 25-27) in Thunder Bay;
•approved travel expense claims for Mayor Roy Avis in the amounts of $684.23 and $40.85 (for attendance at the NOMA conference and an economic development meeting in Thunder Bay on Sept. 26, respectively);
•approved a travel expense and per diem claims for Couns. John Albanese ($654.54), Andrew Hallikas ($520), Paul Ryan ($624.89), and Rick Wiedenhoeft ($520) for attending the NOMA conference;
•approved adjustment of 2013 taxes for properties at 417 Portage Ave. and 1209 Second St. E.;
•approved a break-open ticket licence application from the La Verendrye General Hospital Auxiliary, from Nov. 1, 2013-April 30, 2014, at Sunset Schmiddy’s (256 Scott St.);
•referred a request from Bell Canada, re: proposed grant of easement to Bell Canada over Lot 3 on Williams Ave., to the Planning and Development executive committee for its recommendation;
•referred a financial request from the Friends of the Fort Frances Museum, re: its Wine and Cheese Fundraising Gala on Nov. 7 at the Fort Frances Museum, to the Administration and Finance executive committee for its recommendation;
•referred a request from United Native Friendship Centre for permission to hold a clean-up day to the Operations and Facilities executive committee for its recommendation;
•referred a financial request from Bancroft and Hastings Highlands Disaster Relief Committee, re: fundraising to assist those affected by the April, 2013 area flooding, to the Administration and Finance executive committee for its recommendation;
•proclaimed Oct. 21-27 as “Waste Reduction Week” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•proclaimed November 2013 as “Lung Month” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•proclaimed Nov. 16-24 as “Curling Week” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•proclaimed Oct. 20-26 as “Local Government Week” in the Town of Fort Frances; and
•received an invitation from the OPP Municipal Policing Bureau to attend a session, re: changes to the OPP billing model, on Oct. 30 at La Place Rendez-Vous here.
