The Town of Fort Frances and Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a pair of recent dog attacks in town.
The incidents occurred last week, when an off leash dog allegedly attacked and killed a smaller dog from where it was leashed on a front porch. The same dog was then alleged to have attacked another dog in a separate encounter.
The town said it cannot comment on either of the incidents at this time as they are in the midst of the investigation with the OPP.
The town’s website and Animal Control By-law states that all dogs must be leashed when they are outside, and that owners can be held legally responsible for bites or property damage caused by their dog.
Anyone who witnesses a dog that is off leash or not under control of a responsible person is asked to call Animal Control at 274-5323, or 911 in an emergency. In the event of a dog attack or bite, call By-law during regular business hours or the OPP after hours as soon as possible. The town also recommends obtaining the information of the dog’s owner, including name and address, as well as information about anyone who witnessed the attack or bite. In the event the victim is transported to hospital, the attack or bite should be reported to the Northwestern Health Unit as soon as possible after treatment is complete.
