Speaking French was the name of the game at the “Concours d’art oratoire ‘99” last Tuesday at the Emo Inn.
In the French Immersion category, which featured three students from St. Francis School, Sarah Busch placed first, followed by Jamie Beadow in second and Jennilee Korzinski third.
Meanwhile, Christine Schulzki of Our Lady of the Way School took top honours over the eight students competing in the Core French category.
Greg Johnson (McCrosson-Tovell) was second while Melanie Plett (J.W. Walker) came third.
Also competing in the Core French category were Emma Brown and Karen Mercure (St. Francis); Brittany Bowman (Our Lady of the Way); Chad Helder (McCrosson-Tovell); and Erika Boersma and Kaleb Firth (Sturgeon Creek Alternative Program).
The top three winners in each category received plaques for their achievements while the others were given medallions.
“It turned out well,” said Teresa Dennis, curriculum co-ordinator with the Northwest Catholic District School Board. “We had about 55 people in attendance, which is up from last year.
“I, or rather all of us, were impressed with the skill of the speakers,” she added.
Sponsored by the local separate school board and Canadian Parents for French, the contest is open to grade seven/eight students from across the district enrolled in either French Immersion or Core French programs.
