The spirit of community service is alive and well at Robert Moore School.
The school’s Builders Club—a junior version of the Kiwanis Club—held its installation of officers Thursday night.
Tanner Bell was named president, Carra Onichuk vice-president, Jenna Wilson secretary, and Alexa Lesperance treasurer.
Also installed into office were Paige Silver and Sarah Glover, who are the school’s canteen managers.
Dr. Robert Lidkea, treasurer of the Fort Frances Kiwanis Club, was on hand to explain to each officer what his or her role is and to wish them luck in the upcoming year.
The club’s president, Robert Sletmoen, also was on hand for the ceremony, as well as friends and family of the club members.
There are almost 40 members from Grades 6-8 in this year’s Builders Club, and Thursday marked the first time a male was installed as president.
“That is a first,” said teacher liaison Sarah Freeman-Kivimaki, who offers guidance to the club members along with fellow teacher Lorina Fryer.
The club’s most recent work includes a food drive for the local Salvation Army food bank and a financial donation towards the school’s new playground equipment.
“The kids, they decide on where the money goes. It’s strictly a student-run club,” Freeman-Kivimaki said.
The students also are hoping to put together a float for the Santa Claus parade later this month, and will sponsor a family for Christmas through the Salvation Army.
Dr. Lidkea noted another Builders Club is being organized at J.W. Walker School here and likely will have its first meeting later this month.
