Just days after Donald Trump took office, Borderland Pride issued a statement cautioning the local 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Borderland Pride characterized President Trump’s stance on trans and gender non-conforming people as a hostile, condemnable, and “despicable attack.”

So, Borderland Pride’s members unanimously decided against having its annual border crossing pride march due to ongoing uncertainty and safety concerns related to how gender markers might be enforced at the border. Borderland Pride outlined their stance in a press release to the Fort Frances Times.

“Pride is about safety, acceptance, and removing barriers. These values are at the heart of Pride Month, and they’re non-negotiable for us,” reads the release from Borderland Pride.

“After thoughtful discussion, our group of volunteers made a unanimous decision. There’s too much uncertainty, and we won’t be taking any unnecessary risks this June 2025. It’s heartbreaking that so many incredible individuals still have to take precautions simply for being their authentic selves, living in a way that harms no one. Let’s continue to look out for one another and support each other.”

Borderland Pride’s statement noted that the decision to keep proceedings to the Canadian side of the shared border between Fort Frances and International Falls was influenced by how much uncertainty there is regarding passing from Canada into the United States.

“Many 2SLGBTQIA+ people face challenges; even here in Canada, one of the safest countries in the world for queer and trans communities,” the release said.

“But, with recent actions taken by the American President, we are left with serious concerns. We don’t know if all attendees would be welcomed across the border. We don’t know if those whose identification doesn’t align with their gender presentation would face issues, and we don’t know if everyone would be safe.”

Because of this uncertainty, the Pride march is being relocated to the Sorting Gap Marina on June 14, 2025.

“The gathering begins at 10 a.m., the march begins at 11 a.m., and the Pride flag will be flown at [noon] at the Civic Centre. Make sure to grab free ice cream at the Marina before the March,” reads Borderland Pride’s release.

“That’s not all – that evening at the Fort Frances Royal Canadian Legion, Kiwanis Club and Borderland Pride are hosting Pride Music Bingo with DJ Party Rock. Doors open at 7 p.m.; Bingo starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 and will be available on Eventbrite and at the door.”
